Addicted to Sewing!

My new nephew, Julius Ng
Between my first sewing class in January and the March trip to meet my new nephew, Julius, I've been sewing up a storm making little gifts for family and friends. I'd never thought sewing would be rewarding in so many ways!

It has been tons of fun researching online for ideas and tutorials, going to Joann every other night for fabric and notions, and then sewing all night after work and on weekends.

I also found sewing to be quite meditative. After a long day at the office, it helps take my mind off the stress as I lose myself into each project.

With every project I finished, I am proud of myself. Sewing is reaffirming, reminding me that I can do anything with enough time, heart and self-confidence.

An unexpected reward is having my dad acknowledged my skills are worthy enough to inherit my mom’s most prized possession, her Singer sewing machine.  I don’t have room for it now in my cozy apartment, but that’s an easy problem to solve!

The most significant reward of all is sewing has allowed me to feel more connected to my mom. My mom took sewing classes as young girl in Hong Kong and worked as a seamstress when she immigrated to the States. One of the fondest memories growing up is how my mom would sew us clothes. With each project, I feel my mom’s presence and guidance throughout.
