Birthday Gift to Mommy

My mom's enthusiasm to enjoy life, despite all its challenges, was contagious, especially on her birthday. My mom loved her birthdays, and nothing kept her down, not even my dad's constant complaining. My mom would gather her closest family and friends and then eat, B.S. and laugh the day and night away. She was so happy on her birthdays – and I was so happy for her because her birthdays were rare day-offs she gave herself from taking care of, what it seems, the world.

My mom’s dedication to helping people was obvious through everything she did. Her selfless commitment to improving lives was evident in her one of her lifetime achievements - Portland Chinese Cultural Association (PCCA). PCCA is a non-profit organization for children of Chinese immigrants, ages 2-18, to come every Saturday afternoon to learn the language and culture of its ancestors. It took her over a decade of hard work, overcoming many challenges, and endless devotion to establish this organization, all the while working two or three part-time jobs, caring for a demanding husband, and helping her three children navigate life.

Since my mom’s passing, her organization's livelihood is in jeopardy– as my mom was the one who fearlessly spearheaded the fund-raising efforts each year so the PCCA can barely afford to pay the teachers’ minimum hourly wages, the rent of four classrooms in the attic of an old church, and school supplies. To help continue my mom’s lifetime achievement of the school and commitment to improving lives, I’ve embraced and accepted the challenge of raising enough money to cover operation costs.

My mom would have turned 55 this year, so I’ve set an ambitious goal of raising $5,500.
This would be just sufficient enough to cover overhead costs for this coming school year. I’ve opened up a Shirley Ng Memorial Fund at U.S. Bank, her long-time employer.

Please consider making a donation, no matter how small or large. Every dollar is greatly appreciated to help support the school, Portland Chinese Cultural Association. The Shirley Ng Memorial Fund has been set-up as a non-profit, so if you would like a receipt of your donation for tax purposes, please send your check (payable to Shirley Ng Memorial Fund) to:

I sincerely thank you in advance for your donation and helping us celebrate my mom's birthday.

Happy Birthday, Mommy! I will always love you. xoxo
